A farming session can unravel before the first dungeon is finished: you pick a Prime Evil Splinter, notice another activity offering something useful, and spend the evening changing direction. In Diablo IV's Season of Hell's Legacy, Splinters give that decision more weight by connecting specific activities to separate progression tracks. Whether you're comparing Diablo 4 Items or deciding where your next upgrade should come from, the useful question is which Splinter supports the content you actually intend to repeat.
Your Next Upgrade Needs a Destination
Start with the reward or progression target you want, then work backward to an activity. "Get stronger" leaves too much room for distraction; completing a stretch of Nightmare Dungeons or preparing several Lair Boss encounters gives your session a direction. That matters because a Splinter's value depends partly on how consistently you engage with its associated content.
Complete the seasonal questline to obtain the three Splinters of Evil. You can bear only one Prime Evil Splinter at a time, with each choice connecting different activities to a corresponding reputation track. Progress feeds into activity modifiers and Iconic Power upgrades through War Plans, making your selection part of an ongoing route.
◆ Pick an activity you can comfortably repeat with your current character.
◆ Set a finish line, such as a run count, an upgrade target, or a fixed play window.
◆ Prepare the supplies and inventory space that your chosen route requires.
The practical benefit is less downtime between meaningful runs. A theoretically attractive route loses its appeal quickly if you spend half the evening preparing for encounters your character cannot finish reliably.
Choose the Splinter That Fits Your Evening
Diablo's Splinter of Terror connects to Helltide and Infernal Hordes. It makes sense when those activities already form the backbone of your session: you can keep your attention on their combat rhythm while advancing the related seasonal track. Players who enjoy moving through enemy packs and sustaining combat have a clear starting point here.
Baal's Splinter of Destruction connects to the Undercity and Lair Bosses. This route benefits from preparation, especially when your intended encounters have entry requirements to check. Decide what you want to repeat before committing, because time spent sorting access and inventory between attempts makes a focused boss session feel surprisingly fragmented.
Mephisto's Splinter of Hatred connects to the Pit and Nightmare Dungeons. Choose it when your evening already revolves around those runs, then select a difficulty you can sustain. A demanding clear can be satisfying, but repeated slow finishes may undermine the progression target that brought you there.
◆ Diablo supports a session built around Helltide and Infernal Hordes.
◆ Baal fits planned Undercity runs and repeat Lair Boss encounters.
◆ Mephisto suits a schedule centered on the Pit and Nightmare Dungeons.
All three also modify the Tree of Whispers, giving that system a place alongside your main activity. Treat suitable Whisper objectives as opportunities within your route; chasing every available objective can scatter your attention again. Changing your Prime Evil path requires acquiring another Splinter from the largest Waking Nightmares, so make switching a deliberate decision.
The Damage Effect Is Only Half the Choice
Each Splinter periodically releases an Iconic Power during combat. Diablo deals Fire damage, Baal deals Cold damage, and Mephisto deals Physical damage. Those effects give each choice a distinct combat identity, but damage type alone does not establish which option will produce your best session.
Each Splinter also increases your vulnerability to its associated Prime Evil. That drawback belongs in the same evaluation as the offensive effect, particularly when survival already feels inconsistent. An impressive burst has limited practical value if deaths or retreats repeatedly interrupt your route.
◆ Watch whether dangerous encounters remain manageable across several runs.
◆ Include recovery, inventory management, and failed attempts when judging your pace.
◆ Favor a comfortable repeatable difficulty while learning how the Splinter affects combat.
From a player's perspective, consistency is what makes a farming setup feel good after the novelty fades. You want enough breathing room to handle an awkward encounter without turning every mistake into a lengthy reset. Adjust your defenses, difficulty, or route when the drawback becomes the defining feature of the session.
Give Each Choice a Fair Test
Commit to a short stretch of comparable runs before making a judgment. Keep the activity and difficulty reasonably consistent, then assess completion time, interruptions, and progress toward your original target. Changing several variables at once makes it difficult to tell whether the Splinter or the route needs attention.
When reviewing Diablo 4 Items for sale, keep the same upgrade target in mind so equipment decisions support the content you've chosen. Your Splinter, build, and activity should work toward a practical goal you can measure. Once that route feels reliable, extending it becomes a much easier decision.
